On Saturday, October 15th, the Hopkins JV Boys soccer team,
played a home game against Sabis on the varsity field, a team not
usually on Hopkins’ schedule. The field was wet due to heavy rain
before the game, and this would lead to some very interesting plays. As
usual, when the Hawks are successful, they score early. Chad
Sanderson scored a goal to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead within the first
ten minutes. Minutes later Sabis got lucky when they scored a goal
off of a deflected cross into the penalty box. About ten minutes
later Chad Sanderson scored another goal, his second of the game, to
give Hopkins a 2-1 lead. The hard-fought first half would end with a
2-1 Hopkins lead. The second half began with a strong Sabis attack,
which would result in a goal about ten minutes into the second half.
Nearly five minutes later, a retaliatory goal by Cole Burdell just
inside the penalty box gave Hopkins a 3-2 lead. There were many shots
by both teams during the rest of the second half without any result.
Both teams fought hard, but the Hawks came out victorious. The final
score was 3-2.

To start off a new 2010-11 season  of basketball here at Hopkins Academy, we have a different coaching staff. Leading the boy’s varsity is returning coach Tim Mayo. This will be his second season coaching here at Hopkins Academy. This year’s roster for the team consists of two seniors (Paul Wanczyk and Eric Croft), four juniors (Andrew Bemben, Chris Koch, Adam Daniere, and Robby Cooke), and four sophomores (Satchel Teixeira, Tim Knightly, Ethan Wenner, and Denzel Colemen). With a relatively young team, they have a total of five returning varsity players: two seniors, two juniors, and one sophomore. Teixeira says, “We lost a lot of valuable players last year and we have a lot of work to do this year. Hopefully, we will make tournament.”

Hopkins Academy soccer is know for always being the team to beat. In the past years, Hopkins Academy wasn’t really a threat, but was more of just your average soccer team. Schools know about us and put us on their radar for the top teams to beat. Last year Hopkins academy boys varsity soccer won the GcGrath South soccer league. Unfortunately there post season was short lived after losing to gateway in the tournament 2-0. After the graduating class left, it took 9 seniors from the varsity squad also. This gave doubt to some when the question of if Hopkins could win league again next year was brought up.
